Building Retail Space for Younger Generations

The large Baby Boomer generation is aging, and their retail demands and needs are now coming second to another large generation: Millennials. The way Millennials shop is different than preceding generations. Millennials love convenience, trends, discounts, and engaging environments with experiences. Retailers and retail spaces need to adapt to this younger generation’s needs. We’re seeing shorter leases, more pop-up stores, and temporary locations appearing. Landlords, along with developers and contractors, need to start refocusing and researching their project demographics and identify retailers who will draw in these Millennials. Retails spaces need to be designed with the Millennial shopper in mind.

As a full-service, licensed general contractor in Florida, our team at FGC, Inc. has extensive experience designing and building commercial construction and commercial construction management. From project to project, we provide more than a simple bid to build.  Since it’s important to consider the Millennial/younger generations when designing and building commercial retail space now, we want to share some things to keep in mind when designing/building retail space for this generation.

Retail Space Designs and Trends Millennials Will Love

  • Millennials like spaces that transition between the indoor and outdoor areas. They like patios, porches, decks, large windows and doors, indoor plants, etc. Bringing the outdoors in helps keep people in stores longer.
  • The younger generation like easy-to-navigate stores.
  • This generation likes stores integrated and connected to technology.
  • Stores that feel like “home” or reflect the neighborhood/area in their design are liked more than stores who are “colder” or cookie-cutter looking.
  • Millennials love engagement and want experiences in the stores whether it’s a touchscreen or gaming stations.
  • Millennials love convenience so creating a store that has space for different types of retail items is attractive to them.
  • Millennials like unique store design that makes the store different and special from other brands and competitors.
  • Younger generations like mixed materials. For example, mixing old materials/furnishings with modern things. They also like combining things that don’t traditional go together, or blended styles such as brick with marble.
  • Copper is becoming a popular thing to use instead of gold or silver in retail spaces.
  • Younger people like raw, unfinished materials, stainless steel and the handmade look.
  • The younger generation loves monochrome color schemes, exposed beams, patterned wallpaper, chalkboard walls/signs, stonework (real or fake), and concrete flooring.
  • Lighting can draw in consumers and help them stay longer. LED lighting and different lighting technologies incorporated into a retail space can make your space eccentric and appealing.

Things to Consider When Building a New Home

Things to Consider When Building a New Home

You’ve decided to build a new home! This is an exciting time in your life, and a big step. There are so many pros to building your own home including having everything customized, brand new, and up to code. When you build a new home, you’re creating a space that suits your needs and wants and will be a long-term investment for you and your family.

Although an exciting time, building a home can be an overwhelming experience. Even if you’re working with a professional contractor, you have a lot to plan and a lot of decisions to make. By working with a full-service licensed general contractor, they can make the process less stressful, and smoother for you –this should be a happy experience for you!

What to Remember When Building a Home

At FGC, Inc., we strive to do the right thing for the right reason at the right time when working with our clients and vendors. For every project we take on, we take pride in our experience and knowledge to create impressive homes for our clients. Since there is so much to think about with a new home, our team at FGC, Inc. wanted to share with you some things you should try to remember when building a home.

  • How big (or small) do you want your home? How many people will be living here regularly? Will you be living in this house year-round/full-time?
  • Do you like an open-concept home? Or, small rooms?
  • Work with the contractor and plan as much before the build starts, so there will be less to worry about later.
  • Be specific and vocal about what you want in a home or what you don’t want. You always want you and the contractor to be on the same page, so you don’t get any surprises.
  • Let the contractor know if you don’t like something, change your mind, or want something changed. You don’t want to live with something you hate or regret.
  • When designing the layout of your home, try to imagine how furniture would fit. The contractor and designers can help you.
  • What do you want for/in an outdoor living area or backyard?
  • Research lighting, appliances, colors, doorknobs, cabinets, flooring, tile, carpeting, countertops, and more as early in the process as you can. You want everything purchased and installed on time, but you also want to make sure you like these items in real life. You also want to know if the exact things you like are available or can fit in your design.
  • Dream big but understand that certain ideas may not be plausible or fit in your budget. The contractor will work with you to get to as close to your vision as possible.
  • Listen to the contractor when it comes to building codes, materials, wiring, and what’s possible or not. They are professionals in building and know what will work and what won’t.

The above list are just some general things to keep in mind when building a new home. By remembering these things, our hope is that you can focus your attention more on enjoying the process!
